Hats Off Day Merchant Information
2015 Theme: Hollywood!Hats Off Day began with Heights merchants in 1984 as a customer appreciation day and eventually merged with other community spirit events in 1989 to become the focal point of our year. Merchants continue to “take their hats off” to their customers and their community today, just as they have been doing for years. Hats Off Day is fast approaching and it’s time for you and your business to start planning! The following information, forms and deadlines will help you plan your activities and get the most out of Hats Off Day. Merchant Activities With 60,000 visitors coming to the Heights, Hats Off Day is your single biggest public relations opportunity of the year. It’s a day when you can give back to your loyal customers, attract new customers, and leave a great impression on both locals and visitors. It is a "customer-making" day, rather than a "money-making" day. Let the HMA know what you are planning for Hats Off Day so that your business name, location and activity can be promoted in our Hats Off Day Event Program, in the Burnaby Now newspaper, and promoted on the HMA's website, Facebook and Twitter. This information will also help the HMA map out activities and alert us of any entertainment conflicts. The deadline to submit your Hats Off Day activity and promotion for the event program is Friday, April 24, 2015. After this date, we cannot guarantee placement in the event program. Theme The theme in 2015 is "Hollywood. We encourage you to have fun with this theme and use it in your business' activity planning. You will help create the visitor's experience on Hastings Street by following the theme. Food Permits If you are planning to offer food to the public as a part of your Hats Off Day activities, you must apply to the Fraser Health Authority for a food permit. Completed forms must be submitted to the Fraser Health Authority by Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Late applications will not be accepted. Adopt-a-Performer The HMA provides a limited number of grants to merchants who hire entertainment. Here’s how it works:
- Hire an entertainer for your business. There are a lot of entertainment options that would appeal to a wide audience, create interest on the street, and be suitable for family viewing. An entertainer is someone who performs for an audience.
- Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and will depend on the other activities that are taking place in the vicinity. Although there is no specific deadline for registration, because of the high demand for the grants, we suggest you call 604-294-8899 as soon as possible to ensure you reserve one. There are four $250 rebates available for entertainment valued at a minimum of $500 and four $125 rebates available for entertainment valued at a minimum of $250.
- Once your business is approved, after Hats Off Day, send a copy of your receipt to the HMA by Friday, August 28, 2015 to receive the rebate.
