Tayebeh Sabbaghi and Mahboub Motamedi of DeliJohn Market are nothing if not hands-on merchants: open for 3 years, this Persian deli has hot food, international grocery, dairy and sweets 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. The only shop in the area serving this combination of goods, DeliJohn caters to anyone looking for a rich, well-balanced and traditional meal.
"Our Kabob is very popular," says Tayebeh, "as well as our lamb or chicken with rice, and our sweets." While the merchants anticipated serving the local Persian / Iranian population, over half of their customers are non-Persian Canadians. "Canadians like more veggies than rice," she observes.
Originally choosing this area for its location, Tayebeh mentions that she does not get to socialize with local merchants as much as she'd like, due to her long hours. "We'd like to move here," she says, to make the most of their time in the Heights. And, though it keeps them "always busy," Tayebeh and Mahboub are attentive to both customers and cuisine and always serve with a smile and a friendly word.
The shop is part grocery, and part casual dining area with small lounge where patrons can enjoy their home-cooked meal. Look out for future developments in the dining area and an expanded range of goods. For hours and more information, call 604-676-7727.
