Burnaby Counselling Group
Where can you find a counselling centre run by professionals who have backgrounds in horseracing, kickboxing and pastoral care?
Since
it began in 1979, the Burnaby Counselling Group has evolved and grown
into an eclectic group consisting of registered psychologists,
registered clinical counsellors, a registered social worker, marriage
and family counsellors and pastoral counsellors.
The
Group provides more than 250 therapeutic hours each month to
individuals, couples, and children. Their motivation - the people of
The Heights. "We really like this neighbourhood," said pastoral
counsellor Denise Caldwell. "We like being able to go for a walk to get
lunch and gelato. Mostly we like the people of the Heights."
"I
love being a part of people's growth, and the privilege of witnessing
their resilience in the face of struggles is exciting!" added Susan
Hobkirk, a social worker with the Group.
The
staff members at Burnaby Counselling Group have had very diverse
experiences. For example, clinical counsellor Al Wiebe has taught Grade
4, worked with racehorses and volunteered with prisoners. Denise
Caldwell is an international speaker on human relationships and
spirituality and has recently returned from delivering seminars in
England, China and the Philippines. Even Melanie Chappell, the
receptionist, will sit for tea with clients in the morning, then head
off to teach kickboxing, karate and self-defence in the afternoon!
Despite
its diversity, this group of six female and two male counsellors has a
dynamic that works. "It's very special. We have a unique blend of
people that create a very supportive and stimulating team of
therapists," id Susan Hobkirk.
The Burnaby Counselling Group is located in Suite 230 Boundary View Plaza (at the corner of Boundary and Hastings).
