Ongoing Projects

The HMA always has projects on the go, and many of them take place year after year to keep the Heights running smoothly and looknig good.

Laneway Redevelopment of 4000-block Hastings (with 4000 -block Pender). Inspired by extraordinary urban laneways such as those in Seattle and Melbourne, the Heights is hoping to provide merchants and pedestrians an alternative shopping area with a unique atmosphere, attractive paving, greenery, and more. If this one-block pilot project is successful, it will be repeated in other laneways of the Heights, creating a draw for shoppers and businesses all over the Lower Mainland.

Heights Banners - Every two years, we give our neighbourhood a fresh look with colourful banners that show off the Heights to locals and those passing through. These banners not only look good, but they give us a sense of place and help promote the area.

In July 2007, Tourism Burnaby sponsored an additional set of banners celebrating the Giro di Burnaby in a unique combination of art and sport.

Heights Physical Improvement Initiatives - These programs are supported by the HMA and intended to sustain and improve the beauty and distinctiveness of the Heights streets. Programs include general cleanliness and the removal of waste and graffiti to more major projects such as Laneway Redevelopment. Two initiatives of immediate interest are the development of the facades of our business district, and the addition and maintenance of murals and other artistic features. Heights merchants and property owners have come together with local artists to make these unique additions and contribute to the dynamic physical presence of the Heights.

Heights Business Directory - Every spring, we launch a handy directory to give local shoppers a one-stop resource to find the goods and services they need, right here at home. Now distributed to over 14 000 homes, the HMA looks forward to increasing circulation and expanding our market in Burnaby and East Vancouver. If your Heights business is not listed in the directory, please let us know. If you are a resident who has not received the Directory and would like one, Contact the HMA.

Special Events - The HMA sponsors several events annually including Hats Off Day, Halloween on the Heights, Light Up the Heights and facilitates city initiatives such as the Giro di Burnaby. These festivities serve to introduce the Heights to new faces, as well as reacquaint visitors with our community and its unique landscape. Please visit our Special Events section of this web site for details.

Web Site - This web site you are looking at was launched in November 2005 and is continually being updated and improved. Please let us know what you think about it, and if you have any suggestions for what might make it better. For continually updated information on HMA activities, visit our What's New main page.
