Upon walking into Mike and Miriam Mikail’s store, Mika Fruitbasket, you realize that they have so much more to offer than just good produce – it’s their warm and friendly nature and their variety of products that make it so special.
Although Mika Fruitbasket is new to the Heights, opening only six months ago, Miriam’s experience in business spans over 20 years. Everything is new for them – the province, the neighbourhood, and the type of business itself, but you wouldn’t know that once you walk in. “We appreciate challenges and change, so we thought that opening a grocery store, with a twist, would be perfect because, after all, people always need food!” Miriam laughs.
What’s unique about the Mikail’s store is that they carry a variety of products. Offerings include fresh cut flowers and plants, Cuban sandwiches, a deli, and a small selection of fruit. Coffee and other products being introduced soon. However, their focus is on quality and variety. In fact, it is the multicultural environment of the Heights that has influenced what they have to offer.
With a store that caters to all walks of life, the Heights, with its cultural diversity, was the perfect place for them. “Most importantly I believe that the area is moving in the right direction, and is growing,” Mike says. Miriam adds that “we are here to service the neighbourhood. At the same time, the neighbourhood needs to help us – we need them as much as they need us.”
With their strong dedication to their community, the Mikail’s have a slew of projects lined up to demonstrate their appreciation for their area.
Spending time with friends, appreciating the nature in BC, walking, and taking full advantage of the community centre is what they enjoy doing when they have the time. Before anything else however, their focus is on their new business!
