Legendary Swinging Girl sign reclaims her place on the Heights
For more than 52 years, the Swinging Girl sign marked the location of Helen’s Children’s Wear. The sign was removed shortly after the store closed its doors in July 2007 and has been refurbished by Sicon Signs in partnership with the City of Burnaby’s Community Heritage Commission.
After a 30-month hiatus, the legendary Swinging Girl sign finally returned to the Heights! The sign was installed on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at its original location which is now the home of Cioffi’s Meat Market and Gourmet Kitchen (4142 Hastings Street). Today, the Swinging Girl features the same 1950s typography but now reads “Heights” instead of “Helen’s” in honour of the her home; the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood. The Swinging Girl sign was recently designated a heritage landmark by the City of Burnaby.
Swinging Girl Celebration
The Heights Merchants Association hosted a special ceremony to mark the long-awaited return of the Swinging Girl. The celebration took place on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 8:15 p.m. at Cioffi’s Meat Market and Gourmet Kitchen (4142 Hastings Street).
Our celebration of the return of the Swinging
Girl was carried out with our friends and neighbours as we watched her shine over Hastings Street once
again.
