It's that time of year again when Heights Merchants take their 'hats off' to the community. The Heights Merchants Association, together with community partners, are wrapping up the finishing touches for Saturday, June 1 and are excited to tell you about this year's Mad Hatter themed Hats Off Day! Hats Off Day will be one hour later this year (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.), which means there will be more time for everyone to enjoy the jam-packed activities and entertainment at the street festival. The day will kick off with the ever-popular Pancake Breakfast, hosted by the Burnaby Lions Club and Burnaby Community Connection at 7:30 a.m. at Hastings and Alpha, next to Community Savings Credit Union. The Hats Off Day Parade continues to be a favourite, with folks gathering to celebrate Burnaby's Favourite Festival. Come 'jump down the rabbit hole' and experience an adventure through the topsy-turvy world of the Mad Hatter along Hastings Street from Gamma Ave. to Boundary Rd. Filled with music, entertainment, street performers, kids activities, food, and a myriad of giveaways, raffles, and prizes, Hastings Street will turn into its own wonderland. The Family Fun Dash will begin at 9:15 a.m., with kids racing down Hastings Street as they are cheered on by merchants and the community. Following the Family Fun Dash is the Parade, beginning at approximately 10 a.m. Prime viewing locations of the parade go fast, so come early to score front row seats! Afterwards, at approximately 11 a.m., another round of festivities takes begins, as the street festival kicks-off. The streets will open up to merchant contributions, activities for all ages, kid play zones, and a range of food and entertainment. For tired feet, rest areas are located at Heights Fountain Square (Hastings and MacDonald, south side) and at Hastings and Alpha (south side), next to Community Savings Credit Union. Both are in close proximity to food, entertainment, and kids’ play zones. The kids’ play zone on Hastings between MacDonald and Ingleton will feature various activities, such as mini golf, bouncy castles, caricatures, face painting, and more. At Hastings and Ingleton, all afternoon the Vancouver Circus School will leave spectators in awe as they perform a special show at the top of every hour until 4 p.m. In between, their amazing artists will continue to perform, so be sure to stop by! Music will also be playing up and down Hastings with folk, blues, and pop genres. To keep the energy going, MacDonald's Mc Café coffee truck will be at the Urban Renewal Site on the south side of Hastings, between Ingleton and Esmond Avenues. As always, the 11 blocks of Hastings Street between Boundary Road and Gamma Avenue will be a treat for your senses. We invite you to experience all of the sights, sounds, and tantalizing flavours that Hats Off Day has to offer. Come celebrate with us and have an impossibly, extraordinarily good time.
