Here at the Heights Merchants Association office, we are working on putting all the finishing touches together for Hats Off Day on Saturday, June 2. Burnaby’s Favourite Festival is just a few days away, and we are excited to tell you about all the new changes and additions to the event.
The Hats Off Day Parade continues to be a favourite, with families and friends gathering together early on a Saturday morning to score front row seats. As always, the parade will kick off with a crowd pleaser – the Vancouver and Seattle Police Motorcycle Drill Teams – at approximately 9:15 a.m. The parade this year will be shorter than previous years and will feature exciting entries centered around the festival’s theme of multiculturalism. This will also allow for even more time for everyone to enjoy the street festival, which is jam-packed with its own features.
We are happy to announce that the Pancake Breakfast is back again, so be sure to drop by the north side of Boundary Road and Hastings Street prior to and during the parade to pick up your tasty breakfast (proceeds will benefit Burnaby Community Connections). We will also be giving away 50 pancake breakfasts at the top of every hour (between 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.), so be sure to make your way over to Boundary Road! Please note that it is first-come first-served and there is only one free breakfast per person.
Once you have got your warm breakfast, you can head over to the rest area sponsored by Community Savings Credit Union (new addition!) on the south side of Hastings Street between Ingleton and Esmond Avenues. The rest area will be available all day, so you are welcome to grab your tasty treats and enjoy them there throughout the day. Community Savings will also be handing out freezies, as well as water and treats for your furry friends.
This year, the area west of MacDonald Avenue will be full of exciting activities and spectacles. The Kids Play Zone will return again this year between MacDonald and Ingleton Avenues, and will feature a giant inflatable maze, a huge bouncy slide and a rock climbing wall. Further along at the intersection of Hastings Street and Esmond Avenue will be an inflatable paintball range, which will feature rubber balls, so that participants will not go home splattered in paint! And at Boundary Road and Hastings Street will be The Flow Show, an exciting and entertaining mobile mountain biking show featuring various tricks and stunts. Make sure to check it out!
This year, we are also excited to announce that we will have the Tourism Burnaby Main Stage on the north side of Hastings Street at Madison Avenue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. From a Punjabi Bhangra group to a Brazilian drumming group, the main stage promises to deliver exciting, colourful and culturally diverse performances all day long.
As always, the 11 blocks of Hastings Street between Boundary Road and Gamma Avenue will be a treat for your senses. We invite you to experience all of the sights, sounds, and tantalizing flavours that Hats Off Day has to offer.
