We are excited to announce the winners of the 2013 Hats Off Day Parade!
The Heights Merchants Association held an award presentation on Wednesday, August 28 at the Vancity Burnaby Heights branch for winners of the 2013 Hats Off Day parade. The parade is at the heart of the well-loved annual Hats Off Day street festival that boasts an array of fun and excitement for all ages – including a vintage car show, music, performances, kids’ activities, and taste bud-tantalizing food from the local merchants.
Since 1989, the Hats Off Day parade has showcased a colourful march of a variety of groups with ties to the community. Awards are presented to participants for the following categories: Best Overall Entry; Best Parade Theme; Most Creative Entry; Most Imaginative Merchant; and Best Community/Cultural Group.
“All of the category winners showed their creativity with this year’s Mad Hatter’s Tea Party theme. Your outstanding participation in the parade helped make this year’s theme come alive and will inspire groups in next year’s parade,” said Isabel Kolic, executive director of the Heights Merchants Association.
Winners were treated to breakfast treats and coffee at a reception at Vancity. They also received a special hint for the theme of next year’s parade, which will be announced publicly in the coming weeks. The winning entries were:
Best Overall Entry Rancho Folclorico Cruz de Cristo Dancers
Best Parade Theme Seton Villa
Most Creative Entry Gizeh Shriners International Inc.
Most Imaginative Merchant Italian Directory Magazine
Best Community/Cultural Group Burnaby Public Library – McGill Branch
Honourable Mentions McGill Public Library (2nd Overall) Seton Villa & Burnaby North Marching Band (3rd Overall) Confederation Park Senior Centre & Franklin Preschool (4th Overall) Sweet Pea Coastal Pageants (Best Theme Runner up)
The Heights Merchants Association would like to thank Chevron for sponsoring the parade trophies and Vancity for hosting the event.
