Sweet on the Community
On the Heights, it’s hard not to stop by The Valley Bakery on a regular basis, as the aroma of freshly baked goods is always filling the streets.
In the business since 1964 and on the Heights since 1979, Jack Kuyer and the staff at The Valley Bakery bring something special to the Heights. The Valley Bakery is unique because it has grown up in North Burnaby. Although their products may have changed over the years, one thing has remained the same – their strong focus on customers and their involvement in the community.
Today, their ability to carry a variety of products, which is based off of customer requests, is because of their staff. “Our commitment from our staff enables us to do what we do,” says Jack. Their staff has also helped The Valley Bakery remain a scratch bakery – meaning they make everything on site (minus the donuts!).
With a focus on quality products and service, it’s no wonder that people are willing to drive long distances to come visit the bakery on the Heights; and Jack feels that the Heights is the perfect location. “There’s nothing more central than here. We’ve got huge vistas, lots of amenities close by, nice green space, and access to cultural and sports facilities, and parks,” states Jack. It’s these reasons and the strong sense of community in the Heights that Jack values most.
With an appreciation for the community feel of the area, Jack feels that small business has a place in the community. By running a small business, Jack gets to know the people he works with. The family-like bonds have enabled him to get to know his customers better, which is something he really enjoys.
When he’s not busy at the bakery or shopping on the Heights, Jack enjoys riding his motorcycle, skiing, hiking, going for walks and going to the theatre.
