Adele-Rae Florist is a second generation, family owned and operated business. Kathy Hanson, Adele-Rae Florist’s owner, naturally stepped into the profession after her mother. Kathy’s mother has always been a florist, and one day decided she wanted to own her own flower shop. In 1963 she purchased Adele-Rae, and it has stayed in the family since. Initially, Kathy started in the sales and office sector of the industry, but overtime, she learned the design aspect of the industry. She has now been working at Adele-Rae for more than 40 years.
She loves the Heights because of its sense of community. The opportunity to build relationships with customers and neighbouring merchants creates a sense of familiarity. “Having great neighbours is great working together,” says Kathy. Being a part of the community Kathy is also able to recognize customers and have customers recognize her and call her by name.
According to Kathy, the best part of owning a flower shop is that you are able to celebrate the good stuff with people; anniversaries, birthdays, new business openings, and holidays alike. There is a sense of joy in being able to offer a quality product that everybody needs. Adele-Rae prides themselves on the quality of their products and how long their flowers last. They also try to support local BC growers by purchasing local flowers and roses as often as they can. Over the years Kathy’s favourite flower has continued to change, but she loves all flowers.
When Kathy isn’t in the shop, she’s either tending to her horses, spending time outdoors, or travelling with her husband.
